Cardston Elementary School - Westwind School Division

Mrs. Bright's Grade 5 Homeroom Class

Welcome to 2012

Welcome back! I have many exciting things planned this term as we continue into the wonderful world of learning through inquiry.  Your classes are 45 minutes long and you have different teachers for different subjects. I am your Science, Spelling, Narrative, Art, Cursive Writing and Computer teacher.

Parents, for your convenience I have linked Alberta Education's Curriculum Handbook for Parents and Grade 5 At-A-Glance. Both documents outline what your child will learn this year in Language, Math, Social Studies, Science, Health, Computer, Art, PE, and Music. http://education.alberta.ca/media/445763/pub5.pdf   http://education.alberta.ca/media/446151/5bro.pdf

Homework and Planners

School planners are intended as an effective tool to be used between students, teachers and parents. Students are responsible for recording homework, parent notes and reading minutes in their planners each day.  Planners must be intialed by parents and returned to school the following day.  Any notes written by parents will be addressed in the mornings. The Grade 5 team expects that students are reading each night.  Your child is permitted to take two books out from the library on Monday afternoons.  We encourage students to read the Classics as well as books that are within their reading ability and interest.  Spelling words are recorded in planners and should be reviewed as needed. The following homework schedule is designed to allow students to complete most of their assigned work during school hours

Monday: accelerated math as directed by Mr. Quinton

Tuesday: review science vocabulary words (words can be found in notebook or online)

Wednesday: review of History Tellers and the Provinces and Capitals as instructed by Mr. Toth

Thursday:  review language skills as directed by Mrs. Schow

Language

Mrs. Schow is your Language Arts teacher. She has many fun things planned as you venture into the exciting world of language learning.

Journal, Spelling, Cursive, Novel Study and Narrative Story will be completed in Mrs. Bright's Class.  Please refer to the rubrics in your journal and narrative writing books.  Spelling is individulized and is based on the most frequently misspelled words. Cursive writing instruction follows a program as laid out by Handwriting Without Tears. Novel Study includes the oral reading and study of Grade 5 exemplary literature. Narrative story instruction includes a story as told/written by your child. As indicated by the narrative writing rubric, it must include a beginning, middle and end. Students are to keep in mind that the writing process is a four step process: student as planner (mapping), student as writer (free-writing), student as reader (proof-reader), and student as teacher (explain it to a friend). Students will ensure that stories have a beginning, middle and an end.

Math

Mr. Quinton will be your math teacher this year. He too has many exciting new concepts to share with you.
