Native Legend is due.  The legend needs a beginning, middle, end. Animal Characters, Creation explained (ie. Why the Skunk has White Stripes on its Back?)  or a lesson learned (ie. pride goes before a fall), a problem and solution, animal or nature characters that have human characteristics

Short Story Assignment:

Students will write a short story with no more than 360 words.

Students may hand in a typed document or neatly hand-written on 8 ½” x 11” paper (Include Student name and Class number).

Story is due on February 28, 2012. Please hand into Mrs. Stewart for editing.

January 19 - March, 2011

This week the grade six students are painting a mural on the back wall of the classroom to simulate the town in Maniac Magee.  As the students experience discrimination, they will be journaling their thoughts.  Researching Discrimination and Racism on the internet will enhance the learning experiences as they read this novel.

Comic LIfe will be used to portray what they learned about discrimination.

November 24 - January 7, 2011

Students will be creating a legend after examining many Blackfoot and other Native American legends.  They will experience the culture of Native Americans through music, games, food, and legends.  The creation of this legend will involve creating a pictorial portrayal of a legend, as well as story boarding. A multi-media presentation is expected to be completed in the first week of January (podcast and pictures)

October 12 - November 12

Novel Study: The Van Gogh Cafe

Students will be writing the following mini assignments as responses to their reading:

  1. artistic response
  2. poetry
  3. news story
  4. friendly letter
  5. write chapter 7 for the novel.

In November, students will also write a narrative story using the following rubric.

Autobiography Assignment: My Memories or All About ______________.

You are a famous author.  Your publisher is requesting that you to write an autobiography (About the Author) to print on the inside cover of your book. 

Assignment 1:

You may choose one of two styles of writing.

 

Style A:

The autobiography must be at least five paragraphs, and have five sentences in each paragraph.  You can write in a formal style that includes 5 of these 6 topics:

Early years:

Hobbies:

Achievements:

Embarrassing Moments:

Recent Years:

Goals:

 

Style B:

Write about a memory from your life experiences that would make an interesting narrative story for your readers.  It must be no more than a 1000 words, and be an entertaining story.

Assignment 1 Writing Rubric: (You will need to consider the following in your writing)
* Did I write everything I was assigned to write: (i.e. Five paragraphs with a minimum of 5 sentences in each, or a 500 to 1000 word story.)
* Did I use "Show not Tell" sentences? (Did I paint a picture through actions, dialogue, emotions)
* How was my vocabulary? (Did I include details; rich vocabulary (i.e. used ‘wailed’ instead of ‘cry’, ‘gawked’ instead of ‘look’, ‘scampered’ instead of ‘went’)
* Did I use writing tricks? (metaphors, similes, personification, compound sentences, variety of sentence openers)
* Overall how did I do? (spelling, punctuation, paragraphing, etc.)

 

Assignment 2: artistic talents

Your publisher would also like to review your artistic ability. The publisher requested to include an illustrated cover of your writing.

 Assignment 2 Rubric:
